Security beefed up at popular tourist hangouts

Tourism police has beefed up security at popular hangouts and hotels in the wake of last week's al-Shabaab attack on a Nairobi hotel in Kenya.

Plain clothed and covert police officers have been deployed at many hangouts frequented by tourists, Daily Monitor reports.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire told local media that the move is aimed at securing places which could be a target by terrorists.

Last week, al-Shabaab claimed an attack on a business complex which houses an exotic hotel in Nairobi, Kenya.

At least 21 people, including tourists, were killed during the attack which was described as 'cowardly' by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Uganda has been alert on terror warning ever since the 2010 twin terror attacks in its capital Kampala were over 76 people were killed during the final match of the World Cup.
